Thousands of innovative thinkers from the digital industries have flocked to Hackney today to see the launch of this year’s Digital Shoreditch festival, one of Europe’s largest, high-profile events for the tech and creative community.

With a global attendance expected to reach over 15,000, Hackney Council as a founding festival member and as one of this year’s key headline partners, will be leading a line-up of events and talks aimed at supporting the growth of Tech City, encouraging networking with local businesses and creating employment opportunities while showcasing the new Opportunity Hub in Hoxton.

One of this year’s festival highlights includes the Council-organised ‘start-up tour’ leading over 100 investors from all areas of the tech industry on a tour around Tech City, introducing them to some of the most exciting start-up businesses in Shoreditch and encouraging attendees to explore how these businesses can be funded and supported.

Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Hackney Council
It’s once again a privilege to be given the opportunity as a local authority to showcase our support for Digital Shoreditch and the growth of Tech City, building networks and connecting with the community to help make London not just the UK’s leading tech cluster but a global centre for new thinking where people can come, launch products and test new ideas.

Back in 2011 at the first Digital Shoreditch event, I greeted some 300 people. Today, that number has grown to over 4,000 attendees in the main venue alone. This reflects the huge and continuing popularity of Hackney as a unique and popular destination, and Shoreditch as a growing and vibrant tech scene which exudes creativity, convergence and collaboration.

There is an incredible variety of immersive events taking place across the two weeks of the festival, and the Council is honoured to be contributing to these, through talking about our Hackney 100 initiative, the panel session looking at skills and access to tech jobs, a talk on the state of tech city and our fantastic new Opportunity Hub. With well over 100 other festival events, this year’s Digital Shoreditch promises to be the best ever.
