Benefits cheat jailed for two months

A BENEFITS cheat has been jailed after pleading guilty to three counts of fraud amounting to more than £2,500.

Gavin McIntyre, 32, of Aldergrove House, Upper Clapton, failed to inform Hackney Council and the Government’s Department for Work and Pensions that he was in paid employment between September 2007 and January 2008, while receiving benefits.

As a result, he received a Housing Benefit overpayment of £1,304.76, a Council Tax Benefit overpayment of £264.18, and a Jobseekers Allowance overpayment of £1,005.55.

McIntyre was sentenced at Thames Magistrates Court on 2 September to two months of imprisonment.

Cllr Samantha Lloyd, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “The Council will not tolerate benefits cheats, and will not hesitate to pursue them through the courts.”
