Hackney Council is very proud of the accolades gained at the annual Loo of the Year Awards 2018 held last week in recognition of its support and performance in delivering this essential service.

The Council received 5 Platinum Awards for toilets in the borough which are managed by Environmental Services in collaboration with contractor Danfo. The Council has also increased its standing on the Loo the Year League Leaderboard. Of the top 20 toilets in the country, the Council now ranks at number 13 having moved from position 17 last year which involved fighting off strong competition from other entrants. The five locations which gained awards in Hackney are:

  • Ridley Road near the market

  • Wilton Way at the front of the Town Hall

  • Stanway Street near the market

  • Stamford Hill near the housing office

  • The Narrow Way

Loo of the Year Awards provides an independent assessment of toilet provision and recognition of the standards achieved based on ‘the toilet standard’ for the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Leading retailers, restaurant and pub chains, visitor attractions, holiday parks, shopping centres, local authorities, as well as the cleaning and facilities management sector. The Awards encourage the highest possible standards in all ‘away from home’ washroom and an established benchmark of washroom provision and compliance to national standards.

Cllr Jon Burke, Cabinet Member for Energy, Sustainability, & Community Services
“At a time when many public conveniences are being closed across the country due to extensive Government cuts, Hackney Council continues to support the provision and maintenance of high standard wash rooms which are accessible to all.The Loo of the Year Awards’ Platinum recognition not only commends a very high standard of cleansing and maintenance but also considers other important factors such as accessibility and disability. This recognition is down to the hard work and diligence of Hackney environmental services team working in partnership with our contractors Danfo to achieve this externally assured benchmark.”

“I’m exceptionally proud of this external recognition of our Council’s hard work, professionalism, and exemplary performance across competition in the UK. Achieving a top 20 place is a significant achievement for an Inner London borough, and to improve performance over the year and attain 5 platinum awards is just outstanding. These toilets are widely used, with statistics suggesting Ridley Road has a footfall of 2000 visitors every day.”
