The National Skills Academy for Construction Awards ceremony, which took place at the Skills Show, Birmingham on Saturday 16 November, recognised projects which have set specific targets around recruitment and training, and support local economies.

Currently in its third year, Hackney Homes’ National Skills Academy (NSA) programme was developed in partnership with construction companies to provide training and maximise employment opportunities on the Decent Homes project.

As well as developing and supporting small businesses by providing health and safety and leadership and management training it has also introduced local NVQs to help individuals improve their skills.

“It’s great to be recognised at this year’s awards ceremony. Projects such as this highlight the advantages of partnership working to benefit our residents and the local community. Having met some of our local apprentices I also know how enthusiastic and committed they are to developing new skills and working for local residents.”
Cllr Philip Glanville, Cabinet Member for Hackney Homes and Regeneration Estates, Hackney Council

Jeremy Galpin, chair of the National Skills Academy for Construction, said: “Every National Skills Academy for Construction accredited project has set employer-led targets relating to skills and training, meaning that more and more construction projects are helping local people to undertake apprenticeships and placements and gain the skills they need to compete in today’s competitive industry.

"With the support of the Construction Industry Training Board, we are delivering qualifications to meet the current and emerging needs of the industry.”
