Free fitness classes in parks and centres across Hackney

Look and feel amazing this Autumn/Winter 15 by getting fit for free as Hackney Council continues its popular community exercise classes in parks and centres across the borough with a new timetable of activities.

Yoga, boxing fitness, circuits and bootcamp are just some of the many offerings from the updated ‘Our Parks and Spaces’ Council-funded fitness programme, held in 17 indoor and outdoor venues.

Helen Bailey, 57, has been attending yoga sessions in Hackney Downs since last May and has recently branched out to ‘Back to Exercise’ classes in Springfield Park.

Helen, from Homerton, said: “In 2011 I was diagnosed with cancer and fortunately recovered relatively quickly, but it made me aware that health is not something to take for granted. I had tried going to the gym but it hadn’t really worked for me and I liked the look of yoga but classes were expensive. So I was really pleased to find Our Parks free exercise classes.

“I’ve met some great people at classes, Our Parkers are quite a mixed bunch of ages and abilities. It’s a great way of getting mobile and fit and because it’s free, it means that you can experiment with different classes to find one, or more, that you like.”

Sessions are available every day of the week until 27 March next year.

The Our Parks and Spaces sessions have proved extremely popular with a wide range of residents and workers in Hackney. I’m delighted that we can continue to host them across so many venues in the borough, making it as convenient as possible for local people to get fit and healthy.

The classes are fun, expertly-run, and best of all free, so there really is no excuse not to turn up to tone up.
Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council

Born Barikor, CEO and Founder of Our Parks, said: “Hearing and seeing Our Parkers’ stories is amazing. Hackney was one of the pioneering boroughs to take a leap of faith and fund an Our Parks free exercise programme for all residents. This has changed the way in which we consume sport and physical activity by further lowering the barriers of entry into community fitness."

To take part, register your details and sign-up for the classes you want to join at: www.ourparks.org.uk or call: 0800 1114 464. You can also turn up before sessions to take part but spaces are limited and priority is given to those who have booked.

Alternatively, timetables will be displayed within parks, libraries, leisure centres and in the Hackney Service Centre, in Hillman Street, Hackney Central.
