Over 1000 children will take to Hackney’s streets by bike on Thursday 27 June as Bike Around the Borough returns for the ninth year.

More than 40 schools are due to take part in the mass bike ride, which has previously set the world record for the highest number of people cycling in a continuous ‘bike bus’.

On the day, children will gather at Hackney Downs, and then cycle to Clissold Park, where the bike bus will pick up more participants, before heading on to London Fields, past Hackney Town Hall and back to Hackney Downs.

Bike Around the Borough aims to promote cycling among Hackney school children, giving them the chance to practice the skills they have learned through national standards cycle training and to help them see how easy it is to travel around Hackney by bike.

Following the ride, there will be a summer cycling celebration at Hackney Downs, with food, drink and cycling-themed activities at the park. The celebration event is open to the public and will run from 3.30 to 8.30pm.

Cllr Jon Burke, Cabinet Member for Energy, Waste, Transport and Public Realm
We have been running Bike around the Borough for eight years, and every time it gets better! Pupils spend months preparing and looking forward to the day. It is fantastic to see them cycling on our roads and hopefully the day’s activities will show them how fun, healthy, and easy it is to get around the borough by bike. For the first year, we’re also excited to announce that, just like the recent Hackney Half Marathon, we’ll be eliminating single-use plastic bottles from the event, significantly reducing its ecological footprint.
