We would like to extend our sympathy to the family and friends of the woman who was shot in Westgate Street in London Fields, Hackney on Sunday evening. The victim is currently in hospital and her condition is being treated as life-threatening. 

We understand the sense of shock and the questions that incidents like this raise. We are working with the Metropolitan Police and local partners to support the investigation.

This brutal act reminds us that we cannot afford to be complacent and brings home the urgent need to prioritise tackling serious violence. We will continue to do everything we can to work with the police and our communities to end violent crime in Hackney.
