Inspirational talks from TEDx at Hackney Libraries

Hackney Libraries are set for the arrival of TEDx, a series of inspirational talks that share global ideas with local people.

TEDx will be coming to Hackney libraries from 16 September with a series of pre-recorded talks from some of the world’s most inspirational thinkers that will spark discussion and the sharing of ideas amongst people who live in the borough.

TED is a non-profit organisation that aims to spread ideas usually in the form of short talks of 18 minutes or less. Starting in 1984, TED today covers topics in more than 100 languages with TEDx events helping to share ideas in communities from around the world. In 2012, TED Talks celebrated its one billionth video view.

TEDxHackneyCouncilLibraries events will include two pre-recorded talks that have been plucked from the TED archive of more than 1,000 online talks from across the globe. Each talk will be on a set theme; from ageing with passion and how stress can be a good thing to the power of love letters and why regrets shouldn’t be a regret.

All of the talks will be introduced by a host who will then lead a group discussion after both films giving the audience an opportunity to share their thoughts on the topics and how they could prove to be an inspiration for themselves and others. They are free events for ages 13 years and over.

The dates, times and talk topics include:

  • Wednesday 16 September 2015, 2-4pm: Age is but a Number, Dalston CLR James Library
  • Thursday 24 September 2015, 2-4pm: A Stressful World, Dalston CLR James Library
  • Friday 2 October 2015, 2-4pm: Love and Secrets, Homerton Library
  • Wed 14 October 2015, 2-4pm: Looking Forward, Dalston CLR James Library

After each of these first events, attendees will be given the chance to choose the selection of talks for a series of other events due to take place from mid-October right through to mid-December.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council
Hosting TEDx events at Hackney libraries is a fantastic opportunity to get local people together from across the borough to share their thoughts, feelings and opinions on range or real-life topics while also enjoying expert talks taken from across the world. All of the events are free so why not spend an afternoon at one of our libraries and get inspired by TEDx this season.
Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council
This Hackney Libraries TEDx season of talks and debates is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to get together, listen to experts talk about subjects that matter to all of us and then discuss how these topics affect our everyday lives, and possibly inspire us to see things from a different perspective to even make changes!

I believe that these talks should be inclusive, that everyone should have a voice as personal stories and experiences are always valuable. We can learn from the experts but most of all we can learn from each other! Local libraries have always been a neighbourhood hub for learning and exchange, so where better to hold this season of talks.
Lucia Scazzocchio, from the community focussed group the Cultivaters, will be hosting the TEDx events
