Hackney begins consultation on the proposal to return housing management to the Council

HH consultation

On 21 July Cabinet agreed the joint proposal from Hackney Council and Hackney Homes to consult with secure and introductory tenants and leaseholders on the proposal to return housing management to the Council from April 2016.

The consultation, which starts today, will give tenants and leaseholders a chance to have their say on the proposal. The Council and Hackney Homes value the views of its residents and are encouraging as many secure and introductory tenants and leaseholders to complete their surveys.

Rupert Tyson MBE, Chair, Hackney Homes Board
Hackney Homes and Hackney Council value the opinions of our residents. Now Cabinet have agreed our joint recommendation to consult on the return of housing management to Council, we will make every effort to ensure we engage as many tenants and leaseholders possible during this process.

Hackney Homes was set up in 2006 to deliver the Decent Homes programme and has replaced windows at more than 16,000 properties and upgraded more than 6,000 kitchens and bathrooms. Although the Decent Homes programme is due to end next year, investment in residents’ homes will continue.

Cllr Philip Glanville, Cabinet Member for Housing
Hackney Homes was primarily set up to deliver the Decent Homes programme which will be successfully completed in 2015. While Hackney Homes has achieved a lot more, including improving the services that residents receive, with the contract between the two organisations coming to an end in April 2016 and the further savings needed, now is the right time to review this arrangement.

As part of the legal requirement to consult with tenants regarding any changes to housing management an independent research company, Ipsos MORI, have been appointed to ensure that this consultation is fair and valid.

Tenants and leaseholders should begin to receive consultation packs from 11 August; information is currently available via www.hackneyhomes.org.uk/consultation or www.hackney.gov.uk/hhconsultation
