Healthy living tips from your local library

Hackney Council continued its drive to encourage more people to take advantage of what’s on offer at their local library.

Stamford Hill Library, held the Libraries for Life Healthy Living event, the second in series of open day events in Hackney libraries. Over 400 people attended and were able to take part in a range of activities aimed at promoting healthy living. These included sampling tasty food from Saladmaster, smoothie making, advice on stopping smoking, massages and free health checks.

Hackney Council s Cabinet Member for Community Services, Councillor Jonathan McShane said: “Libraries really are a great resource for the local community. Not only can you borrow books but you can use the internet for free, join a reading group, find out information about your local area, or do your homework. Come along, join your local library for free and start taking advantage of what s on offer."

The Council also wants to know what would encourage more people into Hackney libraries and how we could improve the services that we provide. You can help by completing an online survey at www.hackney.gov.uk/libraries

Hackney Council’s eight libraries are a fantastic community resource – with over a quarter of a million books and 57,000 DVDs and CDs just waiting to be borrowed, and all for FREE!

Over 70,000 people are members of Hackney Libraries. They have been changing over the last few years in bid to give people more of what they want. They are open longer hours - with three libraries open Sundays. Clapton library has recently been refurbished offering customers a modern comfortable environment within a superb listed building, and a new flagship library at Dalston is due to open later this year.

Hackney libraries have regular book promotions and events. There are over 150 PCs with FREE internet access. Young people can use the homework resources and all libraries have quiet study space and a wide range of study materials. All libraries in Hackney have collections of books and DVDs on better diet, giving up smoking and healthy living.
