Hackney youth project short listed for a national award

One of Hackney’s successful youth projects Laburnum Boat Club has been short listed for a prestigious 2008 Children and Young People Service’s Award in the Health and Wellbeing Category for their inclusion work with young people with disabilities.

The Club, which is funded by Hackney Youth Service, operates on the Regents Canal in Haggerston and has been a central part of the community for over 25 years, encouraging and enabling young people and their families to discover the world of boating, to exercise, make new friends and have fun.

The Awards celebrate achievement and best practice in work with children and young people across the UK and are sponsored by national magazine Children and Young People Now.

Councillor Rita Krishna, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said: “I am delighted that Laburnum Boat Club is on the shortlist for this prestigious award. The club does tremendous work to extend opportunities to all young people in Hackney in a fully inclusive manner.”

The range of activities available for young people with disabilities to engage with physically demanding water based activities at Laburnum Boat Club are almost unrivalled in London. They offer everything from canoeing, kayaking and narrow boating to water sports training, cycling trips and other non-boating workshops in a supportive, creative and positive environment.

One of their many projects is a pioneering Sports Clubs aimed specifically at Young People with Disabilities. This includes two after-school clubs that encourage and enable up to 30 local young people with disabilities, ranging from severe autism and cerebral palsy to learning and behavioural problems, to get involved with sport.

Several of these members have since gone on to become fully integrated in the main Youth Club, the work having transformed their lives.

Members of the Club will attend a glittering Awards ceremony at the Hurlingham Club on 20 November, when the winners will be announced.
