Hackney One Carnival Volunteers needed

Hackney One Carnival is set to return on 15 September to bring the borough's streets to life with spectacular costumes, energetic dance and uplifting music and the Council is looking for volunteers to help make this years event a success.

The event brings together hundreds of performers from carnival, theatre and community groups across the borough with the opportunity to showcase their talents and be a volunteer in the run up to and on carnival day.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council
Following on from the success of the event last summer we want people, if they can, to volunteer and get involved with the Hackney One Carnival. As a legacy from the celebrations of 2012 it will be a great way for residents to come together and celebrate the borough’s diversity, creativity and community cohesion.
Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council

The carnival has also always relied on volunteers to be stewards and this year, volunteers are required to help steward the procession, an event in Gillett Square and at a food court in Ridley Road. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with registration and general administration. Access to local performing units can also be arranged for those keen on getting involved in the creative process of making costumes and participating in the procession.

Games Makers set a benchmark for how volunteers interact positively to the public and their experience can help with making the Hackney One Carnival a fantastic spectacle for residents and visitors.

Initial plans for the day include a carnival procession, live entertainment in Gillett Square, a judging point along the route and a food Court in Ridley Road.
Look out for further announcements on the route and the event shortly.

In 2012, Hackney One Festival saw thousands of residents and visitors out on to the streets to welcome the torch to Hackney and celebrate at the many events across Hackney along the Olympic Flame route.

Games Makers, past Carnival volunteers or anyone keen to get involved, should contact shabaka.thompson@hackney.gov.uk or register your interest in volunteering for the Hackney One Carnival at Volunteer Centre Hackney on 020 7241 4443.
