Hackney Council successfully prosecutes smoker

On Wednesday 22 September at Thames Magistrates Court, Mr Adnan Sozuguzel, aged 53 of E8 pleaded guilty to smoking in the Turkish Social Club at 130 Clarence Road, London E5 on the evening of Thursday 19 November 2009. He was given a conditional discharge of 12 months and ordered to pay £50 in costs after a successful prosecution by Hackney Council.

Mr Mehmet Erdem, aged 44 of E5, and the owner of the club pleaded guilty to failing to prevent smoking in a smoke free premises at the same address. He was given a conditional discharge of 18 months and ordered to pay £100 in costs.

Since July 2007 it has been against the law to smoke in all enclosed public spaces. Hackney Trading Standards and Environmental Health regularly inspect premises to ensure people are not smoking. Both the smoker and the owner of the business are liable to be prosecuted if smoking is found to be taking place.
