Free trial pitch for new traders on Hackney's Markets

Hoxton Street Market

First-time traders will have the opportunity to trial market trading for free as a part of new initiative that also rewards existing stallholders for recommending Hackney's markets to others.

Launching on 1 September, the new scheme is the first of its kind to be trialled throughout the borough, giving new traders the opportunity to pitch-up for a limited time at one of Hackney's six iconic markets free of charge.

Existing market traders can also take part in the scheme, receiving a free day pitch fee if they introduce a new trader to a Hackney market.

The number of traders wishing to do business in Hackney across 700 pitches is on this rise, and with this new scheme the aim is to increase the number of traders in the borough further.

Hackney Council has also had success in working with enterprise charity Community-Links and Hackney Community College in running projects that have brought young entrepreneurs to markets across the borough through similar schemes and now want to widen the opportunity to anyone looking to start a business via market trading.

Cllr Feryal Demirci, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Hackney Council
The six markets that stretch across the borough are some of the most iconic in the capital, visited by thousands of people every week. We want to encourage new traders to join our markets, adding to their ongoing success and popularity. We understand that pitching-up in a new area can sometimes be daunting, so this new Council initiative reduces some of that financial risk by providing trading days free-of-charge. I would encourage all new and existing traders to find out more about this initiative.
