Free cinema screening for families in temporary accommodation

FAMILIES in temporary accommodation enjoyed their own special event at the Rio Cinema on Saturday afternoon (20 June), a free screening of a Disney film.

More than 200 people packed out the Kingsland High Street venue, to watch comedian Adam Sandler’s recent blockbuster Bedtime Stories.

The event was organised by Hackney Council’s Housing Needs Team, and staff were on hand so that parents could find out more about services and options available to them.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has recommended this event to other councils as an example of a good way to ask and find out how to improve services for those in temporary accommodation.

Cllr Nargis Khan, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Temporary accommodation is certainly not an ideal long-term solution to housing issues, which is why events like this one are important to find out how we can improve services for residents, while at the same time working to create more affordable homes in the borough.”
