Find out more about adoption in Hackney

Hackney residents who want to find out more about becoming an adoptive parent are invited to an information evening on 21 August at Stoke Newington Town Hall.

They will be able to meet existing adopters, as well as staff and social workers from Adoption North London – a group of six local authorities working together to find loving homes for some of their most vulnerable children.

The information sessions will give prospective adopters the chance to ask questions on a one-to-one basis, as well as see a presentation about the adoption process. Adopters will be on hand to give an honest account of their stories, sharing the ups and downs of becoming a parent.

Staff will also discuss the outstanding support package offered by Adoption North London.

Sally, 46, who adopted her daughter through Adoption North London, said: “Adopting a child is life-changing – not just for the child being adopted but for the whole family. It’s an emotional journey, and as a parent, one you will find rewarding and fun – even with its challenges.”

There are lots of myths about who can and cannot adopt. Adoption North London’s adopters come from a huge range of backgrounds: they can be gay, lesbian or straight; married, single or living together. Some own their own homes and others rent. The main requirement is that you have space in your home – and your heart – to raise a child.

Many of the children waiting for a home have a black or mixed heritage background, and the team are particularly keen to hear from couples or single people who could help these children develop their identity and explore their heritage.

Cllr Anntoinette Bramble, Cabinet Member for Children's Services
Becoming an adoptive parent is one of the biggest choices anyone will ever make and we want to make sure that people considering adoption feel supported every step of the way. Our information evenings are an opportunity to find out what it’s really like from existing adopters, and also to find out about the practical parts of the process in a relaxed environment. I’d encourage anyone who is looking to complete their family to come along to Stoke Newington Town Hall and find out more.
