Calls for submissions to Life Under Lockdown project

Hackney Council has launched a new cultural project, Life Under Lockdown, and are appealing to local residents to submit work created over the lockdown period. These will feature on the new website Lovehackney.uk which showcases #HackneySpirit being shown in the face of this global pandemic.

With social distancing and self-isolation radically changing the way we live, the project aims to capture the borough’s creative expressions of this extraordinary time. A selection of entries will feature on the Life Under Lockdown area on the new Love Hackney website and provide a platform to showcase the work that residents may have found new time for.

Participants are invited to share work from paintings, drawings, writing, photography or any other art forms suitable to enjoy online. You don’t have to be a professional photographer, artist or published author as the project seeks the work of everyone from all backgrounds and ages.

Submissions have already been sent in and include photo entries (pictured) of Aubrey (3) and Maeve (2). Parent Chelsie Hoxby said: "Our approach to lockdown with two very young children and two small businesses has been to make this time stimulating, entertaining and as uplifting as possible, and that's for us as much as the children. It has been an entirely new challenge but we wanted this to be a happy time for our family with our children shielded from any anxiety."

Cllr Guy Nicholson said: “Hackney has always been home to a thriving creative community. This new platform will be an opportunity to showcase their work and inspire those who visit it online. We’re going through an extraordinary time due to the ongoing strain of the coronavirus, but Life Under Lockdown will be a way of capturing Hackney’s creative expressions and resilient artistic spirit.”

Submissions are being accepted via an online form and entries for publication will be selected from the Council’s Cultural Development team. The Love Hackney website will be updated regularly to reveal the work as it comes in.

Selected works may eventually be placed in the Hackney Archive as the council captures this important time in Hackney’s collective story.
