Adult Learning Services learners celebrate their achievements

Hackney Adult Learning Festival Cllr Williams and Learner

Cllr Carole Williams and the Speaker of Hackney Council, Cllr Kam Adams, joined a celebration for adults who have recently completed Maths, English, ICT and ESOL courses in Hackney. 

The awards ceremony, held at Hackney Empire 2 on 16 October, celebrated the achievements of over 200 students who completed community based courses funded by Hackney Learning Trust. 

The learners, who studied during the academic year 2018-19, at venues all across the borough including schools, libraries, children’s centres and community centres, received their certificates from the guests of honour.

Cllr Carole Williams, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Human Resources, congratulated the learners at the ceremony and praised the high standard of teaching, learning and achievement at Hackney Adult Learning Services.

I would like to congratulate all learners and encourage you to keep learning, to progress onto higher level courses, and to explore different subjects. I am incredibly honoured and privileged to share in your celebrations. It is days like this that make it an absolute pleasure to be a Councillor.

Special awards were presented to exceptional learners including, Darren Dorsett, Marie Carver and Abigail Omolade who all won the Learner of the Year award.

Crèche worker at Fernbank, Gertie Philips Atiemo received the staff member of the year award for her instrumental work in the success of Family Learning ESOL pilots launched this academic year.

Cllr Kam Adams, who attended the ceremony for the first time congratulated learners and told the audience about his personal experience of working overseas and learning a foreign language.

Adult Learning Services are continuing to offer a range of English, maths, ICT and ESOL courses at different levels. 

Courses this year include: a course for beginner reader-writers, qualifications in functional English and maths, ESOL courses up to Level 1, a course for learners wishing to improve their spelling, and a very popular pottery with maths course.

Advice sessions take place regularly at five venues across Hackney.
