Young Hackney volunteers were recognised for all their hard work and effort supporting young people across the borough, at a thank you ceremony on Thursday 21 September.

Volunteers, council staff and young people from Hackney gathered to watch live music, speeches, presentations and performances. Amongst these were presentations from Hackney Youth Parliament, Hackney Sports Ambassadors and Youth Go Global.

Smera Nadeem, a volunteer at Shoreditch Adventure Playground said: “I volunteer because life’s not just about work. It’s about making a difference and helping the future.”

Heartfelt thankyous were given by young people who talked about their experiences working on Young Hackney projects with support from volunteers. The event finale included a performance from Mya-Louise, 16, who participated in the most recent Artist Development Programme at Hackney Empire, which moved the audience to loud cheers.

Homerton Hospital’s Dr Ronke Ikharia, who volunteered at the Inspiring Young Women event earlier this year said: “Tonight was amazing, the young people are so positive and confident. It was nice to meet new people and catch up with people and fellow volunteers I’ve met in the past, and the singing finale! Wow, awesome. I really hope more people consider volunteering for Young Hackney.”

Cllr Anntoinette Bramble, Deputy Mayor of Hackney
The night presented a much deserved opportunity for us to acknowledge our current volunteers and all their efforts towards the development of our young residents. We look forward to hosting more events like these to celebrate those committed to making a difference in our borough.
