A big thank you to Hackney volunteers!

As Volunteers Week 2022 draws to a close, we want to say thank you to the amazing volunteers who continue to provide invaluable support across Hackney.

With over 800 charities and community groups such as Hackney Foodbank, Hackney Doorways and Hackney Playbus, there are 1000s of volunteers in Hackney who play an important role in supporting charities.

Helping to match volunteers with placements, Volunteer Centre Hackney continues to support hundreds of local people into placements every year. Throughout the pandemic, they have recruited over 1000 Covid-19 vaccination centre stewards, 268 Community Supporters, who offer friendship to those socially isolated, as well as 250 public health champions who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

In addition to the hundreds of other volunteers such as litter pickers, chairs and secretaries of TRAs and TMOs, gardeners, carers, playworkers and many more who have been an active part of the Hackney volunteering community.

This year, as we continue to recover from the pandemic, and as volunteers return to their usual working patterns, volunteers are needed more than ever.

Cllr Carole Williams, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Human Resources

Volunteers can go unseen and unrecognised. That’s why Volunteers Week is an important opportunity to celebrate the incredible dedication and contribution Hackney volunteers make all year round. By giving time, experience and skills to support others, volunteers enrich their lives and the lives of others, build new relationships that are life changing, develop new skills, and enhance opportunities that lead to future job prospects.

Cllr Carole Williams, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Human Resources

92% of people who volunteered with us this past year said the experience brought them together with people from different communities. You will meet new people, make new friends, and learn to do new things. Volunteers enrich communities: establishing groups, sharing expertise and experience. We all benefit from volunteering!  So why not make Volunteers Week the time to give it a go?

Lauren Tobias, CEO of Volunteer Centre Hackney

Volunteers Week takes place 1-7 June every year and is a chance to recognise and raise awareness of the life-changing contributions of volunteers across the UK. The Council have teamed up with Volunteer Centre Hackney this year to encourage more residents to sign up and volunteer.
