Youth Service marks LGBT Month

February is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month and Hackney Youth Service’s LGBT project group is doing its bit to celebrate.

The group - The Green Door - is working in partnership with Hackney Museum and other local organisations, to put on a series of events to celebrate the contributions made by lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and trans people to all of our lives.

The Green Door group has worked on a film, ‘Trans Journey’s’ which explores the science of sex and gender. It is being shown at Hackney Museum as part of the Museum’s LGBT exhibition, which includes a timeline of LGBT events and people dating from the era of Egyptian mythology through to the present day. The Museum is also hosting a performance by lesbian hip hop artist Ms Fontaine on 28 February.

Green Door has also joined forced with Gendered Intelligence, an organisation which promotes understanding of gender diversity, to host a workshop on gender and trans awareness on 19 Feb at the Museum.

Then on 28 Feb, Hackney Town Hall hosts an event featuring a mixed programme including guest speakers, music, a healing tent a juice bar and stalls. The celebration continues on 29 February at the Joiners Arms on Hackney Road from 6pm when information of interest to LGBT people will be available, followed by a cabaret at 10 and then music till 4am.
