Still time to have your say on the Stoke Newington one way system

Public consultation until 10 January 2011

Residents and businesses are reminded there is still time to have their say about the A10 Stoke Newington gyratory during Hackney Council’s public consultation to look into options for managing traffic in the area.

The current road system, known as a gyratory, consists of a network of clockwise one way roads that forms part of the Transport for London Road Network. Originally introduced approximately forty years ago to reduce congestion through and on the approaches to Stoke Newington High Street, in recent years there has been local opposition to the one way system.

Many have expressed their view that pedestrians, cyclists and bus users, as well as drivers, find it difficult to access Stoke Newington town centre and areas close to it.

It is important that we hear how the one way system affects residents, visitors and local business owners. We are particularly keen to hear views on the proposal to introduce measures to improve traffic and road safety conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Council will use the feedback to identify issues with the one way system that are of concern to residents and businesses. Information gathered will help to inform future decisions on transport, road safety and environmental improvements in the area.

The assessment will also be part of the ongoing discussion with Transport for London, the main highway authority responsible for changing the current road layout or operations.

The consultation runs until 10 January 2011 and is open to all. The Council particularly encourages responses from residents and businesses in Stoke Newington as well as people who travel in and around the area.
