Safer Hackney Roadshows to be launched by Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney

Hackney residents are being invited to meet officers from Hackney Police, Hackney Council and the Fire Service to find out how the three agencies work together in the borough to keep the community safe, reduce anti-social behaviour and drive down crime.

Throughout June and July, Safer Neighbourhoods Police Officers and Council Community Safety Officers will run eight roadshows in Hackney community venues.
Residents will be invited to drop in during the day, to share their views; find information on local services; and get useful, practical and local advice on community safety.

Metropolitan Police statistics for 2009 show that total offences in Hackney are at their lowest since 1999, with over 1,000 fewer victims of crime last year than in 2008. And nearly 10,000 fewer victims than ten years ago.

Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney said:“These events are a great opportunity for residents to get to know the Police and Council teams that are working to reduce crime and tackle anti-social behaviour in our borough. We want to hear from as many people as possible about their priorities for a safer Hackney and I encourage everyone to come along and meet the teams.”

Hackney Partnership Superintendent, Mark Bird, said: “This is Hackney residents’ chance to have their say on local crime matters. It’s an opportunity for them to tell us about their concerns and to discuss how these concerns could be addressed.”

Graham Howgate, Borough Commander (Hackney) for the London Fire Brigade said: "Although the number of deliberate fires has fallen, the number of Hackney residents who have accidental fires at home is still of concern. We want to reach as many residents as possible to give them Home Fire Safety advice."
