Thirty residents joined the Speaker of Hackney for afternoon tea to celebrate Silver Sunday, 4 October 2015.

The spritely group also danced the afternoon away to a selection of 50s and 60s tunes.

Chair of Limassol Cypriots Association, Arife Retvan, 70, said: “I was very happy to attend Silver Sunday. I’d like events like this more regularly in order for people to network from other cultures.”

The Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Sade Etti,
It was a lovely afternoon and I enjoyed meeting new people in celebration of Silver Sunday for older people.

It’s important that as a community we do what we can to support those who might be feeling lonely or isolated.

Thanh Vu, 70, said: “I am very happy to have met everyone else who has attended today. I will definitely attend again.”

Ruth Boyce, 68, said: “Very unusual to see something like this for older people. It was lovely to meet the speaker in person. We need more events like it.

Silver Sunday is The Sir Simon Milton Foundation’s annual national celebration of older people and their contribution to their communities. Through a variety of free activities Silver Sunday is offering people a chance to keep active in body and spirit, try new things, meet their neighbours and, ultimately, overcome loneliness.

Hackney’s Speaker will hold an event again next year.
