Mayoral Election 2016

Hackney Town Hall

Hackney will go to the polls on 15 September to elect a new Mayor, following the resignation of long-standing Mayor Jules Pipe CBE.

After 14 years as the borough’s elected Mayor, last month Mayor Pipe announced that he would stand down after being appointed Deputy Mayor of London for Planning, Regeneration and Skills.

The elected Mayor leads Hackney Council and the full range of services it provides. The Mayor can appoint a cabinet of councillors tasked with overseeing specific areas of the Council.

Mayor Pipe formally resigned on 29 July. Nominations for candidates for the vacancy close at 4pm on 18 August. Details of all those standing will be available on the Council’s website and a booklet will be sent to registered voters ahead of the election.

Anyone who is not already registered to vote, or who has moved home since the European Union referendum, should visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before 30 August. Postal vote applications must be received by the Council by 5pm on 31 August.
