Kingsland Market is back

A set of vintage glasses, an Elvis record and some retro 60s curtains were just some of the bargains that visitors went away with at the re-launch of Kingsland Market.

Hundreds of residents attended the re-opening of the historic market on 28 July, which will now be there every Saturday between 9am-5pm. With a wide range of stalls offering everything from second hand furniture to curios.

The market originally started in 1880 as a ‘waste’ market for people to trade their unwanted goods. Sadly in 2015 trading dwindled to just one stall, but the remaining stall holder, Harry West, worked tirelessly with the Council and local business community to bring the market back. Now, in keeping with 138 years of tradition, the relaunched market is once again home to antiques, pre-loved items as well as having the traditional ‘waste’ traders.

The first 100 customers at the relaunch received a free Kingsland Market tote bag. One such lucky local resident who came along to the launch, Janet Nkasaah, said: “The market is great, I love the variety of things here. I’m currently decorating my room and i’ve just purchased some lovely picture frames to go up on my wall.”’

The market attracted both new and old customers, with residents who remembered the market back in its heyday reminiscing and chatting to traders and other visitors.

Nanci Lynch, Trader at Kingsland Market from Rebellio selling haberdashery goods said: “I met many happy customers who welcomed the market and it’s affordable prices. It’s an exciting opportunity to revive this historical local market!”

Cabinet Member for markets, Cllr Guy Nicholson was on hand to launch the day with trader of over 40 years, Harry West, who is also Head of the Kingsland Market Traders Association.

It’s great to see the market back on its feet and in keeping with its traditional roots. I went down to talk to traders and welcome visitors, and ended up coming home with some great bargains myself! There is something for everyone from second hand goods to antiques and vintage treasures, make sure you don’t miss out, the markets up and running every Saturday, all day from 9am.
