Kick off 2014 with a new career in football course

Award winning Hackney Marshes Centre

People with an interest in pursuing a career in the wider world of football are invited to join a new free course which if successfully completed could lead to a volunteer placement in the industry.

The Careers in Football course consists of two BTEC qualifications, Supporting Employability and Personal Effectiveness – level 1 and Supporting activities and events for sport and active leisure – level 1.

The pilot course, which has been launched by Hackney Council in partnership with  Knights Group,  Hackney Council for Voluntary Services, GLL and the London Football Association, includes practical sessions and will give candidates experience of managing football events and projects.

A set number of candidates who successfully complete the course will be eligible for selection for three month long volunteer placements which include football-based activities at Hackney Marshes. These also offer the possibility of gaining experience for those considering careers in a range of related areas, including sports journalism and physiotherapy.

Those taking up the voluntary placements will have their lunch and travel expenses met.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council
I would seriously urge people with an interest in a career in football, sports and event management to take this opportunity to gain a qualification and experience. Prospective future employers and organisations offering training look favourably at candidates who can offer these qualities.
Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council

The course will last seven weeks at around three full days every week and will include practical employability skills, such as leadership and team working

It is also designed to help those who may find accessing traditional routes to employability challenging, to build confidence and gain a meaningful qualification.

Candidates must be aged 19 to 23 and be available for the entire course period and not be in employment or education already.

The next course starts on Monday 20 January. For further details and to apply, contact Michael Cole, Hackney Council’s Football Development Officer. A further course is planned for March this year.
