It s story time at Hackney libraries

Hackney Council is holding a series of FREE, creative story-time sessions at local libraries to encourage parents to read more with their children.

The sessions, set to run throughout February are open to children under 5 and will give parents the chance to brush up their storytelling skills through fun creative reading sessions.

Sharing books with babies and toddlers is a wonderful way to help children learn to talk, understand their world and develop their literacy skills. Early speech and language skills are essential if children are to achieve their learning potential on starting school.

The National Literacy Trust states “Literacy is the combination of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. We all need these to fulfil our potential. Without good speaking and listening skills children will not be able to develop literacy skills. These life skills are essential to the happiness, health and wealth of individuals and society”

Parents attending the sessions can also collect a free Talk to Me DVD containing lots of top tips for helping children develop their speech and language.

Councillor Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Community Services said: “It’s important that we encourage our children to read and we do it from a young age. This will help develop their speech and language and stand them in good stead for the future. These story-time sessions are a great way to spend time with your children and will help make story telling more fun for you and your children.”
