Hundreds of older residents regularly enjoy Council's exercise club for over-50s

More than 800 older residents a month have been enjoying the benefits of a specially designed exercise club for those aged 50 and over.

Pilates, Brazilian dance, spa days, badminton, swimming lessons and chair-based exercise are just some of the wealth of classes offered since the programme, Better Club 50+, launched last May.

The Better-run club, based in Kings Hall Leisure Centre, in Lower Clapton Road, delivers around 15 classes a week for Hackney residents who can enjoy a day pass at the centre at a special older person’s discount rate of £1.80. More than 830 people regularly take advantage of the special on-the-day 'pay and play’ rates.

An open day to celebrate the first anniversary of the popular club was held at Kings Hall on Friday, 6 March. Chair aerobics accompanied by a professional drummer, a belly dancer taster session and free healthy eating classes were enjoyed by more than 60 older residents who attended the club’s birthday party.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council
We’re delighted that Better Club 50+ has been such a success and we’d encourage all our older residents to give it a go.

Older people should be aiming to get around two-and-a-half hours of moderate exercise a week to keep them fighting fit. We know this can be difficult but our club classes are specially tailored for those who may not be as agile as they once were.

Not only is the club a great way to get some exercise there is also a chance to make new friends in our social area and through various organised events.
