How does your garden grow - Hackney in Bloom 2014

First prize Best Front Garden, Hackney in Bloom 2013

Hackney in Bloom, Hackney Council and Hackney Homes' free gardening competition returns this summer, giving green fingered local residents, schools, businesses and communities the chance to show off their gardening skills.

Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, the competition recognises the borough’s top gardeners and encourages sustainable gardening, so helping to keep Hackney a green and pleasant place to live.

As long as your entry is in Hackney, you can apply. This year, prizes will be awarded in nine categories:

  • Best Front Garden
  • Best Container Garden
  • Best Blooming Pub and Business Premises
  • Best Community Garden
  • Best Housing Estate Garden
  • Best Food Growing Project or Enterprise
  • Best Young and Green Fingered Award
  • Best Newcomer
  • Best Wildlife Garden

The judges will be looking for originality, design, impact, colour, quality and sustainability as well as specifics outlined for each category.

The competition is a great opportunity for anyone interested in gardening to show off their skills and help keep the borough a welcoming place for residents and visitors. Gardening is not only healthy exercise and contributes to a healthy environment but it is also a good way to stay active and meet people. The standard of entries in the competition is always amazingly high.
Kim Wright, Hackney Council's Corporate Director of Health and Community Services
