Have your say on the Stoke Newington one way system

Do we need a one way traffic system in Stoke Newington?
Residents and local businesses are invited to have their say about the A10 Stoke Newington gyratory during Hackney Council’s public consultation to look into options for managing traffic in the area.
The traffic system, known as a gyratory, consists of a network of clockwise one way roads which includes: Stoke Newington High Street; part of Rectory Road, the western ends of Brooke Road and Northwold Road; Manse Road; and the western end of Evering Road.
The current road system was originally introduced approximately forty years ago to reduce congestion through and on the approaches to Stoke Newington High Street.
In recent years there has been local opposition to the one way system which is perceived to cause congestion, speeding, create severance and promote "rat running" along parallel streets.
Many residents and businesses have expressed their view that pedestrians, cyclists and bus users, as well as drivers, find it difficult to access Stoke Newington town centre and areas close to it.
The one way system forms part of the Transport for London Road Network, and Transport for London is the main highway authority responsible for changing the current road layout or operations.
The Council is responsible for minor alterations that can improve road safety, amenity or traffic conditions in other local roads, and is currently conducting an appraisal to look into options for managing traffic in this area.
Councillor Feryal Demirci, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “It is important that we hear how the Stoke Newington gyratory system affects residents, visitors and local business owners; and we are particularly keen to hear views on the proposal to introduce measures to improve traffic and road safety conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. Information gathered will also help to inform future decisions on transport, road safety and environmental improvements in the area.“
The Council will use the feedback to identify issues with the one way system that are of concern to residents and businesses. The assessment will be part of the ongoing discussion with Transport for London.
The consultation runs until 10 January 2011 and is open to all, but the Council particularly encourages responses from residents and businesses in Stoke Newington, also people that use the transport links in and around the area.
