Free fitness classes in August for Hackney's over-50s

New Age Games

Boccia, yoga and cricket are just some of the ways Hackney's over-50s can keep fit in August.

The classes are part of Hackney Council’s New Age Games which offers a range of free fitness classes for older residents at local leisure centres and parks across the borough.

A special month-long schedule will begin on Monday, 4 August, when the normal Games’ programme breaks between 27 July and 31 August.

Classes will be held in Clissold Park, Hackney Downs, London Fields and Shoreditch Park, and also include dance fit, walking football and tennis.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council
New Ages Games have proved extremely popular with our older residents and we're keen they don't miss out in August. As always there is a mix of fun and interesting exercises classes available so there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Hackney Council

Attendee Winifred Roach said: “Due to New Age Games I do not have time to think of my ill-health, I feel that I am reliving my youth.”

According to official statistics, people who are physically active reduce their risk of developing major chronic diseases, such as coronary heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes by up to 50%, and their risk of premature death in general is reduced by 20-30%.

Cllr McShane added: "We know that physical inactivity is a silent killer and is the fourth highest cause of global mortality so we're keen to help our residents meet the Department of Health adult activity guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week to improve health."
