Hackney Council Apprentice scoops London Councils award

Ways into Work Apprenticeship

This week, Mayor Jules Pipe presented the London Councils ‘Best Contribution by a New Apprentice’ award to Helen, an apprentice who has been working in the Council’s Ways into Work team for 10 months.

The London Councils Borough Apprenticeship Awards, now in its fourth year, helps to recognise excellence in individuals and boroughs across the capital.

After meeting Mayor Pipe, who is Chair of London Councils, Helen said:

“It’s an honour to receive this award and to be recognised for the contribution that I’ve made to the team and the Council. “Being an apprentice has given me the skills and encouragement to set-up my own projects and a better idea of my future career aspirations to work with people to find employment. Without the apprenticeship, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to discover what I really wanted to do and build my skills to meet my career goals.”

Hackney Council has a number of services and initiatives to help all residents find apprenticeship and training opportunities for future employment.

The Ways into Work team is an employment brokerage service that matches residents to employers. The team has helped to place 761 apprenticeships since April 2010 in a range of Hackney businesses, from the traditional to the tech, hospitality and creative industries. The Council’s Access to Work team also helps to find apprenticeship opportunities in a range of Council services, such as the finance team who have two apprentices that have been building key finance skills in accounting, monitoring and reconciliations, all of which will go towards their accounting qualifications.

There are a further 19 apprentices working for Hackney Homes, which manages the Council’s housing stock of around 32,000 properties. More than 60 former apprenticeships have gone on to work on a full-time basis for Hackney Homes in a number of roles since 2011.

For the continued apprenticeship support, Hackney Council was awarded the best borough by London Councils for generating apprenticeships by working with partners.

Residents are encouraged to contact the Ways into Work or Access to Work teams to find out more about employment or training opportunities in the borough.
