Get walking and get rewards!

Hoxton_0475

Discounts on food and drink are up for grabs for residents who kick-start a healthy walking habit this month.

The Council is launching this year’s Walking is Rewarding Day, taking place on Wednesday 17 May, to get residents walking into a healthier lifestyle.

Residents starting a healthy walking habit by walking to work, school or getting out and about to enjoy the borough’s parks and green spaces on 17 May will get discounts at 10 partner cafes and restaurants across Hackney.

Just 10 minutes’ brisk walking a day is a great way to keep healthy and can help reduce the risk of chronic illness like heart disease, asthma and stroke.

Encouraging more people to walk in the borough will also help to cut air pollution by reducing the number of short car journeys that are most damaging for the environment.

Prizes are also being awarded for the best walking photos of the day – residents can post photos of their walk on social media using #hackneywalking for a chance to win.

To help anyone looking to increase the amount of walking they do, Public Health England’s new Active 10 app, which can be downloaded from the Apple or Google Play stores, helps track walking pace and shows when it can be increased to keep participants healthy.

Residents can claim their reward to use on Walking is Rewarding Day by tweeting @greenerhackney, e-mailing movegreener@hackney.gov.uk or calling 020 8356 1365 to receive their secret discount code.
