Get more out of life - Webinars for disabled residents

A series of online presentations or webinars aimed at helping disabled residents live more independently is being launched by Hackney Council and new media firm SunnierDays.

The webinars will be streamed live every two weeks over the next two months and
are funded by the Council as part of its Transformation of Adult Social Care programme.

Each session has been designed to give practical advice on specific issues such as
independent living and how to secure employment or benefits and accessible housing; accessing local leisure facilities; planning and taking holidays; and making the most of newly introduced personalised care packages.

SunnierDays founder Martyn Sibley, a Stamford Hill resident who has been disabled since birth as the result of the genetic disorder Spinal Muscular Atrophy, will host the webinars and present a series of slides, websites, spreadsheets and word documents while he talks live about how these resources can provide support.
Martyn’s condition means he can’t lift anything heavier than a book, and needs assistance with everything from washing to cooking. Yet, his positive attitude (hence his company name - SunnierDays) has led him to travel around the world, learn to drive a car, and strive to support others who want to improve their lives – disabled or not.

Says Martyn: “I want the session to inspire by showing that anything is possible through real stories, give information about useful resources and mindsets which can lead to a change in quality of life. It fits around the philosophy I have of know your limits, set goals, define the barriers, find the solutions and grab life!”

The project has been funded by the Council as part of its Transformation of Adult Social Care programme. Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Culture and Healthy Communities said: “Martyn is a great inspiration to everyone for his attitude and determination make the most out of life, no matter what the obstacles. These webinars will support the Council’s aim to offer individuals more choice and control over their care and how they live.”

The details of the webinars are as follows:

· September 21 and October 5: Living Independently, looking at issues such as financial independence, accessible housing, personalisation and care.

· October 19: How to access local leisure facilities.

· November 2: Advice on short breaks, travel and adventure.
