Funding available for new Hackney community composting schemes

Four groups in Hackney can receive help to set up their own community composting scheme by spring 2012, with free support from the Council’s Recycling Team in partnership with the London Community Resource Network and Hackney based environmental charity ecoACTIVE.

Applications for funding is open until 30 January 2012 to local voluntary, community or school groups to help them set up a new composting activity in the borough. The four new schemes will be in addition to the eight, two school and six community projects, which are already established in Hackney.

Existing schemes are diverting up to 3,000kg of kitchen waste per scheme each year that would have ended up in the general waste stream. The new community projects will receive support to manage garden and food waste that will create compost for residents in the borough.

Councillor Feryal Demirci, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity providing free support to get even more community composting schemes started in Hackney. I’d encourage those keen to do their bit to help make Hackney greener to submit an application as soon as possible.”

The funding will include a free set of composting units; storage for woodchip and kitchen caddies; information manuals and promotional materials for the community; and a training workshop for participants featuring activities for children.

John Talbot, from Kennaway Estate in Stoke Newington, said: “The on-site composting has been very popular with residents across the estate. The system we put in place with the support of the recycling team has been easy to manage and we are now looking forward to having a sustainable supply of compost for our vegetable patch and flowerbeds”.

This opportunity is open to voluntary and community groups that represent and support local residents and interests; primary and secondary schools are also invited to apply.

It’s not too late to get free support from the Recycling Team. Deadline for entries is Monday 30 January 2012.
