Free Creative Coding Workshops

Budding computer programmers will get the knowhow to create their own graphics, animations and apps thanks to a free workshop taking place next month.

Hackney Council has partnered with Ravensbourne College to offer two free creative coding workshops for Hackney adults interested to learn more about computer programming and how to forge a career in the tech industry.

For attendees aged 18 years and over, the workshops will take place on 2 and 8 September in Hackney’s Opportunity Hub, a venue geared towards teaching residents new skills while connecting local people with employment and training opportunities found in nearby Shoreditch, the home of Hackney’s tech and creative businesses dubbed ‘Tech City’.

The workshops will be led by university lecturers in computing who, with many years of experience in the creative industry, will make the workshops fun while teaching attendees the essentials of computer programming to code their own visuals and graphics on screen, create simple animations and program an interactive app.

The creative coding workshops will introduce attendees to an apprenticeship training course run by Ravensbourne College called Codezoners, where adults spend two days a week in the classroom and three days in a work placement while being paid £10p/h.

No previous experience in computing programming is necessary for the workshops, but attendees should bring their own laptop if possible. There will be spare computers available and food and drink will also be provided.

Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Hackney Council
As Hackney's local jobs market evolves it brings with it the demand for new skills. The partnership between Hackney Council and Ravensbourne College is designed to help connect Hackney's over 18's with the skills needed to find work in the new economy.

For some of us learning these new skills needs expert support and Ravensbourne College is perfectly positioned to provide this. Alongside three day work placements that are paid, this is a fantastic opportunity for more of us to find our place and a living, in Hackney's creative economy.
Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Hackney Council

The creative coding workshops are taking place on Wednesday 2 September (5:30pm – 8:00pm) and Tuesday 8 September (5:30pm – 8:00pm).
