Faizullah Khan, former Speaker of Hackney, presents almost £10,000 to charities

FAIZULLAH Khan, former Speaker of Hackney, has presented almost £10,000 to three charities in the borough.

On 7 July Cllr Khan gave cheques of £3,189 each to City and Hackney Mind; St Joseph’s Hospice; and Age Concern Hackney, his chosen three charities during his year in office (2007/08).

During the presentation in the Speaker’s Parlour of Hackney Town Hall, Cllr Khan said: “I would like to thank everyone who donated to my charities for the year when I was Speaker. We greatly value the work of volunteers, which is essential for those who need it – volunteering is life beyond your life.”

Krishna Fernandes Maharaj, City and Hackney Mind Chief Executive, said the former Speaker was regarded as a hero by service users for inviting a delegation last November on a free day trip to Paris, with tickets donated by Eurostar to celebrate the opening of St Pancras International station.

Olexandra Stepaniuk, Age Concern Hackney Chief Officer, said the charity had been privileged to be chosen two years running by two successive Speakers.

Michael Kerin, St Joseph’s Hospice Chief Executive, thanked Cllr Khan for his help forging links between the charity and diverse communities in the borough.

The total amount for Cllr Khan’s chosen charities during his year as Speaker of Hackney was raised by a variety of means, including direct donations from residents, businesses and council staff, and fundraising events such as the annual Speaker’s Quiz.
