The biennial Hackney Design Awards celebrates the rich and diverse new high-quality architecture and open spaces that contribute to the borough's reputation as a hub of some of the best buildings and places in London.

An unprecedented 64 nominations were received for 50 different projects, which were short-listed to 16 by a panel of judges who are experts in the fields of architecture, development, urban design, conservation and landscape design.

After much deliberation the judging panel made the decision to select five projects as winners. Two commendations and two mentions were also announced by Wayne Hemingway and the Mayor to an audience of representatives from across the design and architectural community of Hackney. The winners of the Hackney Design Awards 2014 are:

  • The Cardinal Pole Catholic School - A project that demonstrates intelligent site planning and a use of materials to create an uplifting learning environment with high levels of sustainability integrated into the scheme.
  • 151 Church Walk - Judges were impressed by the clever use of the site and space that includes an excellent selection and use of materials and detailing.
  • The Gingerbread House - A design that tells a story with subtlety and judgement, providing a sense of delight from the use of playful detailing and materials.
  • The Garden School - A building of the highest quality with a clever plan that maximises daylight and views and the use of soft edges at the boundary that blend into neighbouring gardens.
  • Writers Shed - A scheme with a unique character with the use of simple solutions that perfectly match the client’s brief for light and space. The joy of the ‘shed’ reflects the commitment of the team of young architects who conceived and built it.
