Carton recycling sites doubled in Hackney

Hackney Council s recycling team have doubled the number of sites across the borough where food and drink cartons/Tetra Pak can be taken for recycling.

Cartons are one of the more challenging materials to recycle as they are made from multiple materials including cardboard, plastic and aluminium, all of which need to be separated prior to recycling. National trials funded by the carton industry have been taking place to try to increase recycling.

To promote the recycling of cartons further, Hackney has increased the number of bins provided under the trial. There are now 19 recycling sites across the borough that accept food and drink cartons/Tetra Pak.

Councillor Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “We aim to make it more convenient to recycle cartons, and want people to use the additional sites to support our efforts to reduce waste and help make Hackney cleaner and greener."

Over 10 tonnes of cartons have been collected for recycling in Hackney since the service was introduced in August 2007. With continued support from residents it is hoped that this will be greatly increased.
