Big Draw a big success in Hackney

HACKNEY is the creative heart of London and residents and visitors of all ages have been showing off their talents at Hackney’s Big Draw events.

Dalston Square was awash with colour after over 100 people came together and covered the pavement with their drawings. The ‘Once upon a Time in Dalston’ event featured drawing workshops for children taking inspiration from children’s literature. The event, held on 6 October and the latest in a series programmed for the Square brought together Dalston Square, the Council’s Dalston C.L.R James Library and Dalston Eastern Curve Garden. On 13 October 'Making the Connection'  led by artist Julian Wild saw plumbers pipes and hundreds of elbow joints used to make a communal sculpture.

Joel Belsham who attended the Dalston Square event with his son Red and friend Marshal, both aged five said: This is a really good idea. A good, positive social event.”

Four year old Oscar Fichelson, said: "The drawings are good.  The snake is my favourite because it has lots of different colours.  My shark is cool.  It can shoot arrows out of its eyes.  He is poisonous!"

Big Draw is the worlds biggest celebration of drawing – and events are happening in Hackney this October. The Council is inviting residents of all ages to pick up their pencils and paper and get drawing!
