Abney Park wildflower project wins Tesco 5p bag charge support

Hackney Council could receive up to £5,000 from Tesco Bags of Help for an exciting project to purchase seeds, bulbs and tools for volunteers to create areas of wildflower in Abney Park – the magnificent Victorian cemetery in Stoke Newington.

Abney Park Cemetery

The project will provide tools, materials and training for the Abney Park volunteers. They will learn the ancient techniques of wildflower and meadow management, from preparing the ground to sowing the seed. Dependent on funding, the project will create between two and eight wildflower meadows on site, each will feature different species of flowers and grasses depending on location.

The wildflower meadows at Abney Park will add to the existing biodiversity and introduce new habitats and native species to the site. The wildflower meadows will also complement the graves and allow access to memorials that were previously hidden and overgrown.

Those interested in volunteering at Abney Park should contact volunteering@abneypark.org.

Vote in store to support the wildflower project

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative across England and Wales. The scheme sees three community groups and projects in each of around 200 Tesco regions awarded grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge. Bags of Help offers community groups and projects across the UK a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags. The public will now vote in store from 1 to 31 December on who should receive the £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awards.
